This extraordinary spectral city
lies halfway up the Andes Plateau, deep in the Amazon jungle,
high above the Urubamba River. The Incas had already abandoned
Machu Picchu when in 1535 the Spanish conquistadors defeated the
Incan Empire. The city was then 'lost' for more than three
centuries until the American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered
