Peru uncovers new stretch of Inca trail.

Lima, Jun. 05. A team of investigators at the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park have discovered a new stretch of the famous Inca Trail, the vast road system linking the places of the great empire of South America. The newly discovered section is approximately one and a half kilometers long and between 1.2 and 1.4 meters wide, depending on the terrain. The stretch begins at Wayraqtambo (or Tambo of the winds) and leads up to a platform where visitors can see the Inca llaqta at Machu Picchu, from a totally different angle. Read more
 

The nearly-mile-long road was built over 500 years ago by the Inca, and appears to be intact.

500-year-old road to the Incan site of Machu Picchu was recently discovered by archaeologists working near the famous site. The road is about a mile long and ends near a site overlooking the ruins of Machu Picchu. Read more
