Beginning at the site of worlds greatest cataclysm, which created the natural landscape and geology of the Reef, Johnny Clegg follows that elusive thread of gold, and the manmade landscape it has created in its wake, to discover the diverse ways in which artists have imagined and responded to it. On his journey Johnny meets artists Marcus Neustetter, Willem Boshoff, Sam Nhlengethwa, David Goldblatt, Hugh Masekela and Jo Ractliffe. He also ventures down the worlds deepest gold mine; samples age-old distilled beverages, and revisits memories of his childhood growing up on the reef.
Tau Tona (Great Lion) Gold Mine
TauTona is a gold mine in South Africa. At some 3.9 kilometers deep it is currently home to the world's deepest mining operations.
The mine is one of the three Western Deep Levels mines of the West Wits gold field west of Johannesburg. The mine is near the town of Carletonville. TauTona neighbours the Mponeng and Savuka mines, and TauTona and Savuka share processing facilities. All three are owned by AngloGold Ashanti.
By 2008, the mine reached some 3.9 km underground. This made it the deepest mine in the world, surpassing the 3,585 m deep East Rand Mine by a considerable margin. This new shaft extended the depth from its previous 3.6 km, and will extend the mine's life to 2015.
